Virginia D. "Jenny" Hood

Virginia Darlene "Jenny" Hood, 85, of Beardstown, died Monday, September 21, 2026.

She was born June 19, 1941, in Beardstown, the daughter of William Henry and Ila Adeline Fritz Swan.

She is survived by the father of her children, Carl Hood of Chandlerville; her son, Marty Hood (wife Debbie) of Arenzville; five grandchildren, C.J. Hood (wife Jenna) of Bluffs, Cole Hood of Rushville, Courtney Wood (husband Cole) of Eldorado, Corey Hood (wife Erica) of Ridgway, and Ashley Hood (companion David Crook) of Arenzville; her great-grandchildren, Zayda, Cayden, Liam, Hayden, Addison, Callie, and Kaelor; one brother, Henry Swan (wife Mary) of Savanna; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Crystal, Tammy, and Jodi, with whom she shared an especially close relationship.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Gary Hood; her longtime companion, David Hill; and her siblings, Perry Swan (deceased wife Dorothy), Charles Swan (surviving wife Judy), Hap Swan (deceased wife Sherry), Willa Fisher (deceased husband Rich), Robert Swan, Jim Swan (surviving wife Sue), and Nancy Maher (deceased husband Mike).

Jenny attended Beardstown schools and later earned her GED, an accomplishment of which she was very proud. Throughout her working years, she cared for others while employed at Elmwood Manor and Boyd Nursing Home in Beardstown and later worked in housekeeping at Beardstown Hospital. She attended First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Family was everything to Jenny, and those who knew her will remember her generous heart and fun-loving spirit. She enjoyed playing bingo and scratch-offs, taking trips to the casino, fishing, mushroom hunting, bowling, singing, dancing, and spending time with her beloved dogs. She had a sweet tooth, enjoyed her Pepsi, and was known for making hard rock candy at Christmastime. She also had a habit of rearranging furniture whenever the mood struck.

Jenny was one of the "fun aunts." If you were spending time with Willa, Nancy, or Jenny, you knew there was likely to be plenty of laughter and a good time ahead. She loved making memories with those around her and was generous with both what she had and, more importantly, with her love.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown. Burial will follow in Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the service at the memorial home.
