Velta Allison

January 18, 1928 — August 27, 2017

Velta Julia (Neighbors) Allison, age 89, of Carroll and formerly of Beardstown, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2017.

Born on January 18, 1928 in Heber Springs, Arkansas, she was the daughter of George and Julia (Swafford) Neighbors. She was the seventh of ten children. Velta grew up in Heber Springs where she attended school and began working in a bomb making factory as a teenager in Little Rock, Arkansas. She met Zane Allison at the end of WW II and they were married on March 12, 1946. The couple moved to Illinois where they lived in a few towns before settling in Beardstown where they lived for over 60 years. Velta earned her Associate degree from Lincoln Land Community College. She worked at Kline Department Store in Beardstown and managed the Green Oil Company convenience store for 26 years. She loved working at the convenience store and knew many truckers who came through. She was pictured in a trucking magazine while doing her job. Zane and Velta had two children whom they dearly loved: Marsha and Lyndle “Bo”. In her younger years she enjoyed golfing, needlework, crocheting, quilting, and she donated many afghans to New Hope Village. She was a 4-H Leader and taught many young girls to sew. She loved going to Branson with her son to see the shows. Velta loved being with family and friends, and held an annual Halloween Chili supper for friends and anyone else that wanted to come, for many, many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown and attended the First United Methodist Church in Carroll after moving to live with her daughter and son-in-law Steve and Marsha Nuckels. She was always active in her church and did not want to miss attending. Velta has made her home at Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll since January of 2017.

Velta is survived by her daughter Marsha Nuckels (Steve) of Carroll; her grandchildren Allison Rattenborg (Ryan) of Dunlap, Ill, and Ben Nuckels (Jackie) of Oconomowoc, WI; and six great grandchildren: Jonathan, Katherine, and Elizabeth Rattenborg, and Charlotte, Grace, and Eleanor Nuckels.

Velta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Zane in 2010; a son Lyndle “Bo” in 2014; five sisters: Ruby Mecca, Jewel Thompson, Pearl Neighbors, Virginia Eaker, and Vera Ferguson; four brothers: Loy, Hoy, Coy, and Ezra Neighbors; two sisters-in-law: Mary McCleery, Ethel Waterman; and three brothers-in-law: Lloyd, Kenneth, and Stanley Allison.
