Sharon Gabbert

Sharon Kay Gabbert, age 72 of Beardstown, died Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

She was born December 31, 1945 in Beardstown, the daughter of William “Bill” and Norma Ater Schwalb. She married Lawrence “Larry” Gabbert on June 22, 1962 at First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown.

She is survived by her husband Larry Gabbert of Beardstown; four children Pam (husband Richard) Hatch of Austin, TX, William “Bill” (wife Maria) Gabbert of Beardstown, Allison (husband Tom) Coatney of Bluff Springs, and Marybeth Young of Virginia; 17 grandchildren Kaitlyn and Samuel Hatch, Robert, Marissa, Megan, Mitch, and Maggie Gabbert, Bren (husband Andy) Frank, Ann Stucker, Daniel, Samantha, Ethan, and Alex Coatney, and Kohl (wife Jeni), Brant, Mason, and Gabrielle Young; ten great grandchildren Evin Gabbert, Beckham, Paisley, and Remington Frank, Greyson, Lilly, and Colt Stucker, and Bella, Benjamin, and Chase Young; special niece’s Brandy (husband Jimmy) Hymes of Beardstown and Helen (husband John) Dennis of Kansas City, MO; and great niece and nephews Ross, Emma, and Liam

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Norma Jean (surviving husband Ray) Goben.

Sharon attended Beardstown High School. She was an active and faithful member of First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown. She served as the church bookkeeper, volunteered with Vacation Bible School, and taught Sunday School. She was honored to be able to attend Jimmy Carter’s Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Eastern Star in Chandlerville, Women’s Missionary (WMU), and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, visiting the Amish in Arthur, and serving as an election judge.

Sharon loved a lot of people. She worked and cared for many elderly people, whether it was in a nursing home or going to their homes. She enjoyed the years that she was able to cook lunch for the students at Beardstown Schools. She loved her family, and even more, being able to help with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday, October 29, 2018 at First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 4-6 PM Sunday at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown.
