Melvin Mcgill

Melvin H. McGill, 86, of Springfield, formerly from Beardstown, died peacefully at Lewis Memorial Christian Village on Monday, November 20, 2017.

Mr. McGill was employed by Burlington Route Railroad and the City of Beardstown. He was a very faithful member of the Assembly of God church.

Listening to the radio and taking naps were his favorite hobbies. He loved pizza, popcorn and enjoyed a piece of bubble gum when watching Wheel of Fortune with his wife. The Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks, and Beardstown Tigers were his favorite sports teams. He filled the halls of Lewis Memorial Christian Village with laughter and singing.

He was born in Shabbona, IL on October 27, 1931, a son of Thomas and Zoe Mills McGill. He married Joan Simmons on November 13, 1950, in Beardstown and she survives.

Other survivors include his children: Norma (Jon) Trepal of Springfield; Melvin McGill and Zoe Lambert of Beardstown; Greenville (Cheryl) McGill, Michael McGill and Kay (Tom) Lawson of Springfield. Grandchildren: Amanda (Ernie) Bishop, Jen Long, Christi (Eric) Harbin, Ryan, Nathan, and Benjamin McGill, and Joseph Lawson. Great grandchildren: Ashly (Mike) McGlasson, Rachel and Cody Bishop, Lexi and Laci Harbin, Rhyanna and Marilyn McGill. One great great grandson: Killian McGlasson. Four of his ten siblings also survive: Richard (Joann) McGill, Marvin McGill, Betty Smith, Nellie Dunmire in addition to many nieces and nephews.

His parents, one daughter, Sharon Sue McGill, and siblings Kenneth, Veryle, Thomas, Mary, Joann, and Vera preceded him in death.

Mr. McGill’s funeral will be at 11:30 am Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown with Chaplain Dave Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 - 11: 30 AM prior to the funeral on Saturday.
