Melody Cope Walden, 68 of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at her home.
She was born January 12, 1958 in Jerseyville, the son of Robert Franklin Cope and Shirley Baize. She married Jack "J.P." Walden on March 20, 1988 in their home and he preceded her in death on October 27, 2020.
She is survived by her children Misty Henson (husband Phil) of Bowling Green, MO, Robert Campbell of Beardstown, and Michael Paul Walden of Jacksonville; five grandchildren Nikki Goodwin (husband Dylan), Lucas Epple, Cheyenne Epple, Makena Ortmeyer (husband Jeremy), and Devan Walden; three great grandchildren Jax, Knox, and Xavier, her sisters Kim and Teresa; two brothers John Cope (wife Tonya) and Terry Chapman (wife ??); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son James Bray, a brother Steven, a daughter-in-law Jennifer Walden.
Melody attended Owensville High School in Missouri before raising and caring for her family. She took great pride in her Native American heritage and enjoyed learning about the history and traditions of her ancestors. As a member of the Cherokee Nation, she valued that connection and embraced it throughout her life. Melody was a creative and talented crafter who found joy in making things with her hands. She also loved baking, especially during the Christmas season, when her kitchen was filled with homemade treats to be shared with family and friends.
Cremation rites have been accorded and the family will host a celebration of life at a later date. Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.
