Mary Pond

Mary Elizabeth Pond, 80 of Virginia, passed away surrounded by her entire family, Monday, December 29, 2014 at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

She was born January 24, 1934 in rural Cass County, the daughter of Edward and Emma Weaver Davidsmeier. She married Martin Pond on September 2, 1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beardstown.

Surviving is her husband Martin Pond of Virginia; three daughters Kathy (husband Bill) Wellenkamp of Beardstown, Brenda (husband Dave) Gibson of Petersburg, and Amy (husband Donny) Lancaster of Beardstown; five grandchildren Phillip (companion Ashley Richardson) Wellenkamp, Justin (wife Lindsey) Wellenkamp, Breann (fiancé Rob McGovern) Osmer, Luke (companion Sierra Brean) Osmer, and Donovan Lancaster; four great grandchildren Emily Pratt, Reid and Piper Wellenkamp, and Aubrey Osmer; one brother James Davidsmeier, two sisters Joan McGill and Claralee Little; and her precious pet Socks the cat.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Norman and Johnny, and five sisters Rose in infancy, and Velma, Marcella, Berdella, and Freida.

Mary attended Warrior Hill School in Rural Cass County, and which is now where her homestead is. She was very well known for her home cooking that Cass County residents were lucky enough to sample at several local restaurants including the Illini Inn, Star Café, and most recently The Depot. She was famous for her chocolate chip cookies. Mary was also a huge lifetime St. Louis Cardinals fan and was proud to say she attended a game in each of the three stadium home of the Cardinals.

Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Friday, January 2, 2015 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the services at the memorial home.

Memorials have been suggested to Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice or Sarah D. Culbertson Foundation.
