Greg Edward Mathis

September 22, 1971 — June 10, 2026

Chandlerville

Greg Edward Mathis, 54, of Chandlerville, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

He was born on September 22, 1971, the son of Fred E. and Betty Cox Mathis. On May 9, 2003, he married Cindy Lacey, who survives in Chandlerville.

In addition to his wife, Cindy, he is survived by his children, Aden Mathis of Pleasant Plains, Alec Sutton of Seattle, Washington, and Alissa Sutton of Bloomington; three brothers, Gary Bartels (Nancy), David Bartels, and Steve Bartels, all of Chandlerville; one sister, Denise Dempsey (Mark) of Springfield; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved four-legged companions, Tank, Louie, and Oliver.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bonita Bartels; and two brothers, Sheldon Bartels and Byron Bartels in infancy.

Greg graduated from Balyki High School with the Class of 1990. He dedicated much of his life to the family tree business, now known as Bartels Forest Products. Beginning at an early age hauling logs and assisting with tree removals, he developed exceptional skills operating heavy equipment, particularly a knuckleboom truck. He took great pride in his work and possessed an impressive knowledge of trees and the outdoors. Whether identifying a tree, operating equipment, or searching the woods for mushrooms, Greg was happiest outdoors.

He was of the Christian faith and had recently attended Panther Creek New Beginnings Church in Chandlerville. Greg loved history and enjoyed thoughtful conversations about life, faith, and the world around him. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his greatest outdoor passion was mushroom hunting, a hobby he continued throughout his life.

Above all, Greg's family was his greatest priority. He adored his children and was proud of each of them. He looked up to his brothers and sisters and cherished the bond they shared. Cindy was the love of his life, his caregiver, and his greatest source of strength. Greg often said he didn't know how he would have made it without her and was deeply grateful for her unwavering love and support.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Panther Creek New Beginnings Church in Chandlerville. There will be no visitation.
