Charles Lester "Tuffy" Hance, 77 of Beardstown, died Thursday, May 1, 2025, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield surrounded by his family.
Charlie was born November 13, 1947, in Beardstown, the son of Clifford Joseph and Verna Alene Dosier Hance and was raised of the Nazarene faith. He married Judy Hartung on April 13, 1968 and she survives in Beardstown.
He is also survived by five children: Ron Hance of Jacksonville, Curt (Kim) Hance of Beardstown, Chris (Amy) Hance of Alton, Jason (Christy) Hance of Tulsa, OK, and Karrie (Mark) O'Hara of Beardstown; 15 grandchildren: Casey (Aaron), Blake (Mary), Megan (William), Allie (Oliver), Kirsten (Jordan), Kate (Brandon), Tyler, Gabbi, Cal (Alayna), Brady (Meghan), Owen (Natalee), Nolan, Lily, Maggie, and Brock; 9 great grandchildren: Eli, Jude, Asher, Wyatt, Waylon, Clara, Eliza, Gretta, and Paisleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Raymond, Ronnie, and Rev. Larry Hance, and a nephew Doug Hance.
Charlie graduated from Beardstown High School and went on to have a 45-year career with Oscar Mayer/Cargill. He devoted many years to coaching little league teams for his children and grandchildren. In his younger years, Tuffy was a Golden Glove boxer and later trained athletes in boxing in Beardstown and Virginia. Charlie, an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, enjoyed his morning coffee at O'Hara Auto Glass. He dedicated much of his free time to attending his children's and grandchildren's extracurricular activities, with his favorite moments being those spent with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 4-7 PM Monday at the memorial home.
