Charles Chambers

November 11, 1924 — September 16, 2017

Charles Marvin Chambers, age 92 of Bluff Springs, died Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Heritage Health in Beardstown.

He was born November 11, 1924 in Virginia, the son of Oscar Edwin and Inez Marie Jokisch Chambers. He married Hazel Gulliford on September 13, 1947 in England.

Surviving is his wife Hazel Chambers of Bluff Springs; three sons John (wife Kay) Chambers, David (companion Nancy Giovannini) Chambers, and Michael (wife Valerie) Chambers all of Bluff Springs; four grandchildren Kerry (husband Aaron) Slater, Tracey Laws, Victoria (husband John) Reed, and Brian Chambers; and five great grandchildren Olivia, Sydney, Cole, Chloe, and Mallory.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Roy Edwin Chambers.

Charles graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1943. He joined the United States Army and served during World War II under Pattons Third Army. In 1944, Charles was stationed in England, and that it where he met the love of his life, Hazel Gulliford. They wrote letters to each other while Charles was stationed in France and also when the war ended, and he moved back home in 1945. Just two years later in Yeovil South Street Church in England, Charles and Hazel married. They traveled back to the states and began their life on the farm, and just last week, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Charles was a 4-H Leader for 30 years, a lifelong member of Bluff Springs Methodist Church, and a Member of Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post #1239, where in 2010 he and his fellow serviceman went on the Honor Flight. Charles loved working with wood, especially from old barn siding. Whether he made a craft from wood, or grew produce on his farm, you could be sure that he would give it away. Charles had a gracious and loving heart, and most of all he cherished his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Bluff Springs Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday, at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown.

Memorials have been suggested to Bluff Springs Methodist Church or Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice.
