Carl Anthony Junior Smith, 84 of Beardstown, died Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at his home. He was delivered by his father Carl R. Smith and his mother Mary Whewell Smith, on February 18, 1939 in Bowen area. He married Lynnette Ashwill McGinnis in January 1987. She survives in Beardstown.
He is also survived by one son Steve (wife Deb) Smith of Beardstown; five grandchildren Bob (wife Lynette) Smith of Beardstown, Jeremy Jamison of Beardstown, Misty Smith of Mt. Sterling, Jessica Jamison of Columbia, MO, and Blake Smith (companion Tabitha Davis and her son Tre Harris) of Virginia; three great-grandchildren Remington Smith, Bryson Hamilton, and Noah Hamilton; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Bruce Smith (Trina Ruppel Corbett of Indiana), a daughter Janice Jamison (Steve Jamison of Beardstown), and his siblings Lawrence (Rosemary) Smith, Virginia (Lawrence) Paben, Dorothy (Leroy) Paben, and James Smith at birth.
Carl graduated from Christian Brothers High School (now Notre Dame) in Quincy. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1957 - 1961. His work life began at A&P Grocery as a stock boy. He started a career with Quincy Water Department as a meter reader. Carl transferred his meter reading skills to CIPS in Quincy. He later became a tree trimmer and transferred to Virden, then moved to Beardstown in 1967 as an electric heat representative specialist. Carl retired in 1995 after 33 years, finishing as the Automotive Supervisor for the entire Western Division of CIPS. He later came back to CIPS, providing contractual work. He loved speed, whether cars, drag races, NASCAR, motorcycles, 4-wheelers, or flying. He and his wife enjoyed being a part of the Late Knight Cruisers and Early Tin Dusters car clubs, traveling to car shows and NHRA events. He loved to hunt deer, turkey, and bear. Fishing in remote Canada was an adventure with friends and family. He was an avid gun enthusiast and Charter member of Mascouten Bay Black Powder muzzleloaders. Hunter's safety was essential to him, and he taught courses to ensure safety always came first. He was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, and friend. His memory will live on in each of their hearts.
A celebration of life will be held from 1-4 PM Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the Beardstown Elks Lodge. Military Honors will be conducted by at 2 PM on Sunday at the Elks Lodge by Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post #1239 A family burial in St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery will be held at a later date. Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.
