Bonnie I. Anderson

Bonnie Irene Anderson, 88, of Beardstown, died Friday, August 28, 2026, at her home.

She was born July 19, 1938, in Peoria, the daughter of Percy T. and Eva Piper Newell. She married Calvin Lee Anderson on July 28, 1956 in Beardstown, and he preceded her in death on January 2, 2015.

She is survived by her son, Rodney Lee "Rod" Anderson (wife, Jeannie) of Beardstown; two grandchildren, Jordan Lee Anderson of Beardstown and Danielle Renee Merriman of Beardstown; one great-granddaughter, Lilliana Grace Merriman; her longtime friend, Edith McDougall Harris; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Leah Wuben (deceased husband, Charles), Flossie Robertson (deceased husband, Burt), and Leota Cunningham (deceased husband, Jack); and six brothers, Percy Newell (deceased wife, Rosie), Sam Newell (deceased wife, Norma), Amos Newell (surviving wife, Shirley), Jack Newell (deceased wife, Darlene), Donald Newell (deceased wife, Thelma), and Dale Newell.

Bonnie graduated from East Peoria High School in 1956. She first devoted her time to being a stay-at-home mother, later worked at the Manhattan Restaurant in Beardstown, and retired from Cargill after 20 years. A hard worker, she was still handling 80-pound boxes before moving to packaging and missed only four days of work during her career. Growing up in a large family during difficult times taught Bonnie to be thrifty, hardworking, and never wasteful. Her family was also musically talented, and Bonnie enjoyed singing with her sister Leota, while the others played instruments.

Bonnie enjoyed working in her yard, cooking, and spending time at home. She shared a special friendship with Edie Harris, and the two enjoyed many outings and years of memories together, including a recent trip to Golden Corral to celebrate Bonnie's birthday. Bonnie was proud to be considered an honorary McDougall. Above all, her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Cremation rites have been accorded and private family services will be held. A celebration of life will be held from 2-5 PM, Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at Edie Harris's home on Star Lane in Beardstown. Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.
