Elizabeth B. Hagerty, age 93 of Beardstown died Saturday, June 8, 2019 at her home.
She was born November 29, 1925 in Beardstown, the daughter of Guy and Ruby Worley Lewis.
She married Gerald Brooks and they had two daughters. Sharon Lea (husband Ernie) Sutterfield of Beardstown and Ruth Ann (deceased husband Bob) Brown. She later married Alfred B. Hagerty and they had one son Alfred L. Hagerty of Beardstown, and a daughter Mary Elizabeth Hagerty of Independence, MO.
She is survived by her four children; several nieces and nephews; many cousins; nine grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Jessie Lewis of Quincy. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Thelma Thomas and Marjorie Parker, two brothers Clifford Lewis and Eugene Lewis in infancy, a grandson Alfred B. Brown in infancy, and a granddaughter Jennifer Hagerty.
She attended Beardstown Schools. She worked as a waitress in several restaurants in Beardstown and Springfield. She owned the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop and Hagerty House in Beardstown, and was a master candy maker and talented cake decorator for every occasion. Elizabeth was also a telephone operator for Illinois Bell Telephone Company and for the state of Illinois. She was a charter member of Christian Love in Action, was a member of the Cass County Mental Health Board, and Christened the tow boat Alfred B. Hagerty on July 22, 1967.
Elizabeth was a lifelong member of Community of Christ Church in Beardstown, where she held the office of Priest in the Aaronic Priesthood. She loved her family. They were the most important part of her life, as was her church. She enjoyed her faithful friendship with Betty Hiles, and they were both die hard Chicago Cubs fans.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, June 13, 2019 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 9:30 AM until the time of services at the memorial home on Thursday.
